Working in book publishing, I hear many endearing stories about book clubs: how they operate, how they pick their books, how their members found each other and came together to discuss all kinds of literature.
We all know that many things make a book club special, it doesn’t matter what you read or how many members you have or how many glasses of wine you drink ; what matters most is the connections and conversations that happen around books that mean something and that strike a chord with us.
One of these books is The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe. This book has really hit a note with almost everyone that has read it. It’s the remarkable and incredibly heart-warming true story of Will’s spectacularly charitable and hardworking mother who is diagnosed with cancer, and the journey they take together through books backdropped by cancer therapy, chemo sessions, hardships and many rays of hope.

Official Sweepstakes Rules & Regulations for The End of Your Life Book Club Giveaway Sponsored by Random House of Canada Limited. (“Random House”)
I. HOW TO ENTER NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. The sweepstakes begin October 16, 2012, and final submissions are due by 11:59 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) on October 30, 2012.
II. ONE ENTRY PER PERSON for duration of contest.
III. ELIGIBILITY Sweepstakes is open to legal residents of Canada, excluding the province of Quebec, who are at least 18 years of age at the start of the sweepstakes, excluding all Random House and Chapters Indigoemployees and affiliates. V. WINNER Winners will be notified on or around the close of the sweepstakes. The winners will be notified by email and may be required to sign and return affidavit(s) of eligibility and release of liability within 10 days of notification. A noncompliance within that time period or the return of any notification as undeliverable will result in disqualification and the selection of an alternate winner. In the event of any other noncompliance with rules and conditions, prizes may be awarded to an alternate winner. Taxes, if any, are the winner’s sole responsibility. This would be an amazing win for my book club. Our book club is at work, with a few co-workers. We each select 2 books and then rotate the schedule. We then meet during our lunch hour for our discussions. We used to be called The Paperback Princesses but then we had 2 male co-workers join our book club. We then couldn’t decide on a new name, so we all agreed with Formerly Known As.. It’s been a great experience and opened my eyes to book I may not have ever considered reading. Reading all these books and then opening up the discussions has been a wonderful experience. I would recommend everyone to join a book club.

Our book club has read two books about tigers this Fall; one fiction and one non-fiction. Having several books with a similar central character has allowed us to have a running conversation over several months and do some comparisons between authors about the subject of tigers. It is interesting how the non-fiction story is reflected in the fiction i.e. the role of the tiger and its destructive nature toward humans that cross it’s path.
